Are you looking for a natural oasis to explore and appreciate a site unique to this region? Look no further than the Gilson Creek Preserves. With 42 acres of forested habitat and access to Gilson Creek, one of Brown County’s only trout streams, this unique preserve offers an unforgettable experience.
Protected by Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust, the Gilson Creek Preserves provide a vital buffer from development along the creek, minimizing habitat loss and protecting water quality. These preserves offer a unique habitat that protects rare and natural plants and animals under constant pressure from the surrounding suburban environment.
Gilson Creek I Preserve protects approximately 1,000 feet of Gilson Creek, one of Brown County’s only trout streams, which supports a local brook trout population. The preserve’s unique white cedar woodland community and habitat for many threatened endemic animals and plants border Gilson Creek. An old gravel pit near the entrance to the property serves as a reminder of the Great Peshtigo Fire, a disturbance of historical significance that burned over this property in 1871.
While these natural sites face threats such as the encroachment of common buckthorn and trembling aspen and the intrusion of home development along Gilson Creek, removing exotic species will enhance iris populations and create areas for continued expansion and protection for this species.
In addition to its natural beauty and habitat preservation, the Gilson Creek Preserves offer hunting opportunities for deer, turkey, and other species. Take advantage of the chance to experience this unique and valuable preserve.
