Welcome to the Harbor Lights Preserve in the beautiful Suamico region of Brown County, WI. Our preserve is dedicated to protecting and preserving vast wetlands that serve as a critical habitat for Northern Pike, migratory and resident birds, and countless other species. We are delighted to invite the public to explore and enjoy this unique and beautiful natural space, which offers a wide range of activities, including hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, and bird-watching.
Human development, pollution, invasive species, and other factors have significantly impacted the wetlands of lower Green Bay. However, Harbor Lights Preserve is committed to safeguarding these precious ecosystems and ensuring their continued health and vitality. By acquiring 31 acres of forested wetlands and cattail marsh, we can protect this essential component of Brown County’s productive wetland remnants.
Our preserve comprises a 10-acre cattail marsh and a small pond, which provide breeding spots for waterfowl and stopover sites for land, shore, and waterfowl birds. On the south end of the property, the Brown County Land and Water Conservation Department has completed Northern Pike habitat restoration work, enabling fish to reach the property for spawning in the spring. We also have a continuously flooded portion of the property that drains to Barkhausen Creek through a ditch.
At Harbor Lights Preserve, we are proud to safeguard a Land Legacy Place (Green Bay West Shore Wetlands) and a crucial element of the Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area – a Conservation Opportunity Area (COA). This hard-working wetland performs significant ecosystem services, including retaining and controlling floodwaters, absorbing nutrients and chemicals from the water, and storing them like a natural filtration system.
In conclusion, we are thrilled to welcome you to Harbor Lights Preserve and invite you to experience this unique and precious habitat’s natural beauty and ecological diversity. Our team is dedicated to preserving this vital ecosystem for generations to come, and we hope you will join us in celebrating and protecting this incredible natural space.
